RMTC Hosts National Search for “The MLK Project” - Submissions Due 9/1

(5/15/2012) Red Mountain Theatre Company (Birmingham, AL) and its Executive Director Keith Cromwell, in collaboration with Lee Sentell (Alabama Tourism Director) and Dr. Lawrence J. Pijeaux (President and CEO of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute) are hosting a national search for a one-act written piece to be produced in honor of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

Theatre Tuscaloosa Continues Auditions for GYPSY Tomorrow, 5/11

(5/10/2012) Gypsy auditions continue tomorrow for Theatre Tuscaloosa. The theatre is holding open auditions for the HUGE cast of Gypsy tomorrow night (Friday, May 11). The production will be directed by Paul Looney and choreographed by Stacy Alley, with musical direction by Leslie Poss.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival to Open 2012 Season with THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, 4/13

(3/9/2012) The Alabama Shakespeare Festival will roll into its repertory season when William Shakespeare’s comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor opens on April 13 followed by Henry VIII on April 19. In addition to the openings of these two Shakespearean works, two comedies The Thirty Nine Steps and Travels My Aunt will reopen for the second half of their runs on April 22. ASF’s Extreme Weekends, in which theatre lovers can see all four repertory shows Friday through Sunday are available April 20-22 and 27-29 as well as May 4-6, 11-13 and 18-20.

Seeking to retrieve his runaway wife (and the possessions she has taken with her), Coleman Shedman arrives at the rural meeting house of a southern pentecostal sect with a lawyer in tow. But his wife, Nancy, is unwilling to forsake the love and protection of her new "husband," the Reverend Obediah Buckthorn, and return to the brutal, hard-drinking Coleman. And when the strapping Reverend Buckthorn himself arrives, it is quickly evident that Coleman will not be able to take her back by force. Rich with atmosphere and the feel of southern rural life, the play blends humor and poignancy as it probes into the circumstances and stories of the various cult members.

Whole Backstage Theatre's Pride and Prejudice Closes

(2/19/2012) The Whole Backstage presents its winter season production of Pride and Prejudice through February 19 under the direction of Will Smith. Evening performances begin at 7:00 pm with Matinee’s starting at 2:00 pm. This romantic comedy, by Jon Jory, based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, is being directed by Will Smith of Guntersville, and features Jon Brown and Kayla Harper, both of Arab, in the lead roles. Ms. Harper is playing Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine on the story, while Mr. Brown portrays Mr. Darcy, her love interest.
