Review: TORCH SONG at Marin Theatre
San Francisco / Bay Area: Steve Murray on May 15, 2024

Marin Theatre closes out their 2023/24 season with a newly revised production of Harvey Fierstein’s Tony Award-winning Torch Song. A smash hit in 1982, the original trilogy opened the floodgate of LGBT representations in theatre, film, and television with its universal themes of self-acceptance, family, and equality.

Review: ANNIE at Studio 42 & Co
Arkansas: Theresa Bertram on May 15, 2024

Broadway World saw the tiniest Annie at Studio 42 & Co. production of ANNIE in the Adams-Vines Recital Hall on the Arkansas Northeastern College in Blytheville May 5. However, though seven-year-old Darby Carter was small, she proved that she could stand as tall as the rest of the cast as she belted out her signature song Tomorrow.

Review: Opening Night at Pops Showcases George Gershwin, Harry Connick, Jr., and More
Boston: R. Scott Reedy on May 15, 2024

There were three great pianists on the program when the Boston Pops recently opened its 138th season at Symphony Hall.

Review: CLUE at the Aronoff Center
Cincinnati: Ana-Brit Asplen on May 15, 2024

Though the script is very similar to the 1985 movie of the same name and features many of the same iconic lines and story elements, this adaptation of Clue is successful in its own right. Between a talented cast, surprising design elements, and direction that knew how to transport the story to the stage, Clue is a solid comedy play.

Review: J2 Spotlight's BACK TO BEFORE at AMT Theater Is Spot-On
Cabaret: Rob Lester on May 15, 2024

A cabaret night called Back To Before looked back at the numerous scores of Ahrens and Flaherty. Material from Seussical, Anastasia, Ragtime, The Glorious Ones, and more sounded glorious at the May 7th show.

Review: MACBETH (AN UNDOING), Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh
Scotland: Natalie O'Donoghue on May 15, 2024

When her husband returns victorious from the battlefield with a prophecy that he is to become King of Scotland, Lady Macbeth will stop at nothing to make their darkest ambition a reality.

Review: SIMON RATTLE AND THE BRSO AT CARNEGIE HALL at Carnegie Hall
Classical Music: Peter Danish on May 15, 2024

Simon Rattle is possibly the most interesting conductor before the public today.   And one thing audiences can count on is that no two performances he conducts will ever be identical.  There is no question that he brings forth fire and magical playing.  There is no question he bring forth colors that you never heard in a piece before.  But sometimes, one wonders if its all simply design just to sound different, not necessarily better than the rest.

Review: ROCK OF AGES at The Gateway
Long Island: Melissa Giordano on May 15, 2024

The Gateway of Bellport certainly has another hit on their hands with their current offering of the fun musical Rock Of Ages. Running through June 2nd at the beautiful Long Island venue, this Tony nominee celebrates all things 80's with some of music's greatest songs making up the score. Created by Chris D'Arienzo, there are several story lines woven throughout this raucous musical excellently directed by Keith Andrews.

Review: A SONG OF SONGS, Park Theatre
UK / West End: Louise Penn on May 15, 2024

A Song of Songs has been placed within a traditional Middle Eastern beat by Ofra Daniel, writer, composer, director, and lead actor as Tirzah, unfulfilled wife. Whether through the stamps and flowing skirts of flamenco or thumping percussive beats, the physicality of the piece takes centre stage. What may be missing is an emotional connection.

Review: COMIC CON LIVERPOOL, Exhibition Centre Liverpool
UK Regional: Sarah OHara on May 15, 2024

Since hosting their first event at Exhibition Centre Liverpool in 2018, Comic Con Liverpool have delighted fans with one of Europe’s largest pop culture conventions - and this year’s was one of their biggest, best and most brilliant yet.

Review: WITHNAIL AND I, Birmingham Rep
UK / West End: Debbie Gilpin on May 15, 2024

“What we need is harmony, fresh air, stuff like that.” Almost 40 years after it first graced the big screen, cult classic film Withnail and I has been adapted for the stage – and it is currently in the middle of a limited engagement at the Birmingham Rep.

Review: PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS, Trafalgar Theatre
UK / West End: Aliya Al-Hassan on May 15, 2024

It’s nearly a decade since Denise Gough set the stage alight in Duncan MacMillan’s starkly raw study of addiction. She now reprises her Olivier and Critics' Circle Theatre Award-winning role as Emma for this harrowing and completely absorbing new production of People, Places & Things.

Review: METAMORPHOSES at Folger Theatre
Washington, DC: Jake Bridges on May 14, 2024

Review: Hale Centre Theatre's THE TIME MACHINE is Heart-Pounding and Full of Heart
Salt Lake City: Tyler Hinton on May 14, 2024

The world premiere of THE TIME MACHINE on Hale Centre Theatre’s Jewel Box Stage is a thrilling science fiction ride with a beating heart at its core that adults and teens alike will enjoy.

Review: SOMETHING ROTTEN at The Farmington Players Barn
Michigan: Emily Schenk on May 14, 2024

This was my first time attending a performance at The Farmington Players Barn Theatre. The local talent of these performers blew me away. My favorite performance of the night came from Hannah Haigh, who portrayed the wife of Nick Bottom, Bea Bottom.

Review: Celia Berk's A DREAM AND A SONG at The Laurie Beechman Theatre is a triumph!
Cabaret: Nathan Johnson on May 14, 2024

Sullivan's work is tailor-made for an instrument as pure and nuanced as Berk’s voice. The May 12th show was phenomenal.

Review: #SISTERSINLAW at Royal Oak Music Theatre
Michigan: Emily Schenk on May 14, 2024

This show was not only very informative on many political topics but these women bring a powerful presence to the rooms they fill. The crowd was absolutely loving every word that came from these feminist icons. I must confess I was a first time listener but I was enticed to download several episodes on the way home.

Review: L'OLIMPIADE, Royal Opera House
UK / West End: Gary Naylor on May 14, 2024

Irish National Opera bring a touring production to London in what might prove to be a show for the purists

Review: BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY, Hampstead Theatre
UK / West End: Franco Milazzo on May 14, 2024

Walter Washington is stuck. Stuck in his recently deceased wife’s wheelchair. Stuck in “a rent-controlled palace ruled by a grieving despot king” that he can ill afford. Stuck waiting for City Hall to pay him what he considers his due after a thirty year-long cop career ended in a shooting incident. That’s a whole lot of stuck.
